Birdsong actors explored real tunnel below the Somme

Two of the actors in the new BBC adaptation of Sebastian Faulks’ First World War-set novel, Birdsong, went into one of the real tunnels beneath the Somme as part of their research. Eddie Redmayne, who plays Stephen Wraysford, and Joseph Mawle, who portrays Jack Firebrace, were given a tour of La Boisselle, which is at the heart of the Somme.

Victims of the first airship raid on Britain remembered

On 19 January 1915, the first airship raid on Britain took place. The towns of King’s Lynn and Great Yarmouth in Norfolk were attacked by two German Zeppelins. Several people were killed and buildings were destroyed.
