IWM has produced a new short film to mark the centenary of the Battle of the Somme – one of the most devastating moments in British military history.

Discover facts about the battle and the men who fought in it and see how the site where it took place has changed since 1916. Original footage of soldiers on the Somme 100 years ago has been overlaid on modern-day shots of the same locations in a poignant reminder of the impact of war.

Find out how many shells were fired in the week before men went ‘over the top’ and learn about the first war film, The Battle of the Somme, that documented the battle and became bigger than Star Wars.
