16 August 2017 | Pamela Linden

As Liverpool Cathedral continues its series of exhibitions to commemorate the Centenary of the First World War the Archive team will be looking to celebrate the Chavasse family in 2017.

On 4th July 1917 Aidan Chavasse was killed in action and died in Belgium. He was a First Lieutenant in the British Army, King’s (Liverpool Regiment), 17th Battalion. He was missing in action after the battle and his body was never found despite searches by his brother Francis and other officers.  He is commemorated on the Menin Gate at Ypres.

On August 4th 1917, Noel Chavasse son of the Bishop of Liverpool lost his life. Captain Noel Godfrey Chavasse, VC & Bar, MC was a British medical doctor, Olympic athlete, and British Army officer from the Chavasse family. He is one of only three people to be awarded a Victoria Cross twice.
