On 19 October 1917, a Zeppelin bomb landed in Calmington Road, Southwark, killing 10 people, injuring 24 and demolishing a fish shop, doctor’s surgery and houses. Thanks to funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund, the Friends of Burgess Park project, Zeppelin 1917, will uncover the stories of local heroes and piece together the dramatic raid right over what is now Burgess Park.

Zeppelin 17 will culminate in an exciting season of walks, talks and shows in Burgess Park, where these stories unfolded.

Volunteers are wanted to assist in the project to help discover the dramatic personal stories of  the local people who experienced the raid. No expertise needed – just curiosity and enthusiasm. All ages welcome. Many different volunteering opportunities in August/September/October – and the chance to learn new skills, in a friendly relaxed setting.
