As we move towards the First World War Centenary in 2014 we have some exciting projects that will need your help:
Delve into the world's archives
Over 60 million people served in the First World War. We are working with museums around the world to uncover their life stories. In the UK there are around 40,000 First World War memorials, listing over 800,000 names. Our first project will invite you to find these people in military records, census rolls, newspaper archives and elsewhere. By linking this data together, we can reveal the stories behind the names -- many for the first time.
Read letters and diaries from the First World War
IWM has been collecting personal records of war since it was founded in 1917. We need your help to read and transcribe thousands of the letters and diaries we hold in our collections. We have found moving stories in letters direct from the front line and we need your help in uncovering more. This work will make the content of those documents available to current and future generations.
Help tag almost 1 million images
Could you recognise an ancestor in one of our photographs? Or perhaps you can use local knowledge to tell us where some were taken? We have almost 1 million First World War photographs and most have never been seen by the public. By tagging this remarkable resource, you can help to enrich our history and create new ways for you and others to see the war.Everyone who has remembered so far...
